Born into a low noble family of Ishgard, Marquis might have been considered by some to be one of the lucky ones. This was not the case for him however and in fact the opposite was true due to his being a product of infidelity. Thus rendering him an illegitimate child of House Derinloire.Marquis' mother was a Duskwight servant of the estate that his father, Lord Avellino Derinloire, took as a mistress while his wife was pregnant. Unfortunately for Marquis, he inherited his mother's darker complexion and stood out among his nine other, fair skinned siblings. Not to mention most everyone else in Ishgard. It was the existing prejudice and that he was a bastard that plagued Marquis his entire, miserable upbringing.Lady Eaulinne, the matron of House Derinloire, held a particular hatred for him as the bastard was named her son. It was by her bidding that the legitimate children of the house, her children, ruthlessly beat and harassed him. On a few occasions Marquis was even brought close to death by their actions. He seldom saw reprieve from the unrelenting malice, constantly denied basic things like food or privacy and subject to regular attacks, verbal or physical.. It did not take the lordling long to grow into a spiteful and bitter person, angry at everyone and everything around him. He regularly lashed out and egged on the abuse to make himself feel as if he deserved it, if only to justify it for himself.
At one point as an effort to get rid of him, Eaulinne sent her “son” away to an academy within the city-state, in a bid to make him useful to the family in some capacity. While he had quite the aptitude for magic, his attitude had him expelled rather quickly and sent right back home again. Which only fueled the Matron’s hatred for him further. He was again her problem. One that she fabricated sure, but her problem nonetheless.There was only one thing left that the Matron could do. Wed him out to another family. So, she arranged a marriage for Marquis. Though this of course backfired too as the lordling made no effort to properly court the woman he was suddenly engaged to. She was not spared his hostility and quickly came to resent her betrothed, eventually declaring in front of both houses that she would rather be dead than be his wife.It was this and his general mistreatment that drove Marquis away in the end. He gathered up what few things he owned and struck off into the realm. With nearly nothing to his name and a stolen chocobo, the ex-lordling found his way into the Shroud, learning of the Void and its denizens by pure chance. Intrigued and with a fire for revenge, Marquis sought out others who could teach him of the Void, of its magics and its creatures. He sensed a great power in it just waiting to be taken.Eventually Marquis found his way to Thanalan, having joined the Thaumaturges there for a time until something drew him elsewhere. It was by pure happenstance, wandering through the residential district that the mage discovered the Moonflower Syndicate. The source of what called to him. He couldn’t say why or even what it was that attracted him but he soon found himself among their numbers. With the Syndicate is where he has been since leaving Ishgard and the mages of Ul’dah, advancing his studies in the Void and practice of black, occult magics.
